۱. Ball Valve

The name of this valve is derived from its key component: a spherical ball with a bore, or hole, through its center. The ball is mounted within the valve body and is connected to a handle. When the handle is turned, the ball rotates. In the open position, the bore is aligned with the pipeline, allowing fluid to flow unimpeded. A 90-degree turn of the handle positions the bore perpendicular to the pipeline, effectively shutting off the flow.

    • Hydraulic Ball Valve: Designed to withstand high pressures in hydraulic systems.
  • Flanged Ball Valve: Features flanges for easy connection to pipelines.
  • Stainless Steel Ball Valve: Offers high corrosion resistance, suitable for harsh environments.

۲. Butterfly Valve

A butterfly valve is characterized by a disc, or “butterfly,” mounted on a rod inside the valve body. When the valve is open, the disc is parallel to the flow, allowing for minimal pressure drop. A quarter-turn of the handle rotates the disc to a position perpendicular to the flow, creating a seal and stopping the fluid.

  • Lightweight & Easy to Install: The simple design reduces weight and complexity, making installation and maintenance straightforward.
  • Cost-Effective: They are generally less expensive than other valve types, particularly for large pipe sizes.

Plug valves use a tapered or cylindrical plug that is rotated within the valve body to control flow. The plug has a passage, or port, that aligns with the inlet and outlet when the valve is open. A 90-degree turn of the plug isolates the flow.

  • High Resistance to Wear: The plug and body are designed to be highly durable, making them excellent for handling abrasive or slurry-like fluids.
    • Quick Operation: Like ball and butterfly valves, they offer a fast quarter-turn action.
  • Simple Design: The minimal number of parts reduces the risk of leakage and simplifies maintenance.

۴. Globe Valve

Unlike the on/off nature of the previous valves, globe valves are specifically engineered for precise flow control and throttling. They use a movable disc or plug that is raised or lowered to adjust the size of the flow path. The flow of fluid is forced to change direction, causing a pressure drop.

  • Excellent Throttling Capability: Their design allows for a high degree of control over the flow rate.
  • Reliable for Shut-off: They provide a strong, leak-tight seal when fully closed.
  • Common Applications: Often used in systems where flow needs to be regulated, such as cooling water systems, fuel oil systems, and chemical feed lines.

۵. Other Specialized Valves

Beyond these major types, numerous other valves serve specific functions in various industries:

  • Gate Valve: The most common type of valve for full on/off service. It uses a gate-like barrier that is lifted to open the flow path. It is not suitable for throttling.
  • Needle Valve: Provides extremely precise flow control. Its name comes from the long, tapered needle-like plug that fits into the seat.
  • Diaphragm Valve: Ideal for handling corrosive fluids, slurries, and sanitary applications. It uses a flexible diaphragm to separate the fluid from the valve’s operating mechanism.
  • Pinch Valve: Used for controlling the flow of slurries and abrasive materials. It operates by pinching a flexible tube to restrict or stop the flow.
  • Safety Valve: A critical component for safety, designed to automatically release excess pressure from a boiler, pressure vessel, or other system when it exceeds a preset limit.
  • Control Valve: An automated valve that adjusts flow to maintain a set point in a process. It is operated by an external signal from a controller.
